At a 3.5 stars rounded up to 4, this was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I soft-DNF'd it the first time I picked it up because I struggled with the writing style (too many commas where there should be periods for my taste). I did come back to it and finish it thought, which tells me that the premise was interesting enough to make me keep reading even when the writing mechanics were hard to overcome at times.
The concept was easily the strongest aspect of the book. Emery is broody and I loved her dark humor, but Cameron was the most compelling character and the one who made me keep reading. He's clearly unhinged, and him killing all his partners in the midst of a test-drug-induced haze was a fantastic premise to start with. I loved the insanity woven throughout, and the book had enough unexpected moments to keep me reading even when the execution was lacking.
Emery and Cameron's relationship was great, and I loved that their forced proximity had an external motivator (rather than feeling forced to fit the trope). Cam's hot and cold attitude toward Emery, and her understandable frustration, really added to the tension that made the ending all the better. And with the twist at the end, it really drove everything home and made me immediately pick up the second book despite my issues with the writing.
