Book: Showdown at Recess by Lois Wickstrom

Showdown at Recess teaches children that bullying isn’t right no matter what. The main character stands up to Jojo after winning the race to be the one who starts the game. While all the other kids just stand around and watch the interaction, no one joins in on supporting the main character or Jojo. While I’ve always enjoyed reading Lois Wickstrom’s books to my littles, this one is a little different than the others. Firstly, the word guimpus. I’m not sure if it’s meant to be spelled that way or not, but I did have to look up what it meant because it was something I wasn’t familiar with. Secondly, it seemed like a part of the storyline was left out, I felt like I missed something and even went back and read it again.
Overall Showdown at Recess is a great book for children to understand that you can’t always win and bullying is not right.
