I read this on release in 2022 and I'm enjoying being back in Bolten in audio form. This book isn't as dark as some of KG Reuss' other stories but helps fold Bolten into the Chaos universe with the introduction of Sugar and the Horsemen. I loathe the Lords with the passion of a thousand burning suns but it was all worth it for the Fallon sugar scene. This section was made for a multi cast audio; it's absolutely hilarious as Fallon runs into most of the main characters while being under the influence. "These pants are made of protein" will never not be funny.
Bianca is not having nearly as much fun though and I really feel for her being stuck between a rock and a hard place through no fault of her own. The scenes with Matteo were brutal with Blair Thatcher showing both Bianca's fear and strength throughout. I enjoyed Thatcher's take on Celeste too; I had completely forgotten about that character but I can't wait for more of her as she'll give Hail a run for his money in the unhinged stakes!
I love any excuse for a "my wife" and "mia regina" is top tier but I'm struggling with Dom a little. I like Dom as head of their group, but he seems to be stuck in angry mode for a lot of this book which compared to Levin and Vinny seemed to stall him a little. Levin, a character I didn't like until I did, had a great arc and now I am all in. Vinny has the top spot though as he goes through it big time but still always has a smile for his Baby B. Devon Ryder was definitely my stand out narrator and made me feel all the emotions especially with that ending!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
