Let me start by saying I’m devastated I had to DNF because this is my kind of book! The general plot is so rare to find, a real bully romance that is genuinely dark and haunting and makes you question everything before it emotionally destroys you… yes please!

But sadly I could not get past 25% even with skim reading sections.
The writing style was awful, there were massive jumps in time ranging from days-months and even years but they weren’t smoothly done at all. It just abruptly shifted and the timeline sped forward.
The prose was all over the palce, not smooth nor easy to read. I’d say it was AI written but it’s more like a very early first draft of ideas. No refinement, no editing, no alpha or beta readers.. just ideas scrawled on paper.
The characters are interesting, the mmc is genuinely dark and scary and a great base for a villain!
The FMC was confused the whole time, as was I, at her role in this. We got a little info that it’s her mums doing but we got no history, back story or memories to explain any of it. It was like a miscommunication trope but between the author and the reader. It drove me mad. I wanted to hate the villain and I wanted to root for the heroine but I couldn’t because I didn’t believe in why I should.
Then there is the best friend, I liked her character and what she had to do but again there was massive gaps and holes in her story and behind her actions. How did ‘it’ work? How did they live? Were there any emotions hat so ever going on because we weren’t shown or even told a thing.
So I was reading on, putting up with the time jumps, the gaps in the story, the lack of history and foundations but I couldn’t get past the ‘why’ of it all. Why the mmc was doing everything the way he did it because his actions weren’t hurting her mother- which I believe is the main premise of the plot? And with the mum in the dungeons he could just tell her any tale he likes to break her… there was no audience to act up to, no witnesses to view the torment, if anything surely it’s the opposite and the pack think him weak for letting her get away/leave him? But that’s another angle we know nothing about, we get no information on his thoughts, the pack life, the hierarchy, none of it.
So there’s you go. This could have been a truly brilliant genuinely dark shifter book, but it failed spectacularly. I’m annoyed I wasted my time and I got my hopes up because it really saddened me that it was so poorly written.
I don’t suppose anyone reading this knows of any other rejected/hated mate books I could try? I’ve found so few…
