I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this book. This is not the review I thought I would write, because I truly loved 'Trial of Hades Series', and I adored Kate's writing style. The beginning of this book was really intriguing, and the FMC was so interesting and sassy. I found the whole Assassin's Academy theme fascinating! Addie was determined to become the first female "Eagle" and not another "Swallow", who only use their body to attract their marks. But then, she accepted that fateful fate without even saying a word. I get that they were training to be "soldiers-like", but Addie wasn't compliant, she didn't follow her superior's rules, and she always talked back. So, when her own "dream-position-job" came crushing down, I thought at least she would be a bit angrier or sadder. Especially knowing she would have to "perform" in a certain way.
Additionally, I think her relationship with the "instructors" was weird. Beckett was waking her up with cold water buckets, but we didn't get to know why. Was that a punishment for some bad behavior? Then the whole situation with Deklan and "Assessment Day", did he do that on purpose? She never asked about it. They all said they had been falling in love since the first day, but why? Because she was spirited? They all were, the were training to be ASSASSINS! I just couldn't engage with the relationship.
And personally, I didn't like their first time together. But that's just my own feelings about "why choose" and multi-person intimate relations.
