This book had me on edge in the best (and queasiest) way.
The writing is incredibly vivid - the kind that grips your spine and doesn’t let go. The Orcan scenes? Genuinely stomach-turning at times, and yet I couldn’t look away. The suspense was so intense that I had to remind myself to breathe, and the gothic dark academia vibes are absolutely on point.
Vic is one of my favorite kinds of protagonists - raw, flawed, and trying so hard to figure out who she is if she’s not just someone else’s protector. And I loved that the characters are older, because it made the emotional arcs feel that much heavier.
While the romance is very much a slow simmer (borderline background), Xan was a fascinating presence from the moment he appeared - not a villain, just someone navigating a morally gray world with a sharp edge. The real mystery is who you can trust, and honestly, I still don’t know.
The twists hit hard, the world is rich and layered, and the whole book left me unsettled in the best way. One of the most immersive reads I’ve picked up in a long time - I’ll be impatiently waiting for book two.
