We Call Them Witches by India-Rose Bower is an atmospheric fusion of post-apocalyptic survival, pagan folklore, and eldritch horror set across a bleak, ruined landscape. The story follows seventeen-year-old Sara and her family as they use folk rituals and warded safe houses to protect themselves from mysterious, deadly creatures that have overrun Britain. When a enigmatic girl named Parsley appears without her memories—followed shortly by the abduction of Sara's younger brother, Noah—Sara is forced out of hiding and into the open to save him.
The novel excels at building quiet dread, eerie tension, and grounded family dynamics. The inclusion of pagan wards and ancient ritual knowledge adds a fresh, unique spin to the apocalypse genre. However, the story leans heavily into mood and setting over fast-paced dread, causing the pacing to feel somewhat meandering and predictable in places. While the cosmic horror elements and creatures leave a few lingering unanswered questions, it remains a compelling, atmospheric read for fans of character-driven folk horror and soft sapphic romance.
