The dark vibes of this academia book had me intrigued. The gothic type setting combined with the magic system was unique. The first half of this book the author sets up the story and the tone of the book, while keeping you guessing about the relationships and characters of the story. This book has all the things we love in a dark academia stories. Mystery, magic systems, love interests, found family, danger, necromancy, found family, ghosts, and did I mention Magic Snakes?
This story follows Viola who was born into a magical family to lose some of her close family members to this magic. Viola decides at a young age she wants nothing to do with the magic she inherits and does not want to attend the magic school that she would be forced to go to. Her sister Olivia takes her place to protect her sister and allow her to live a normal life. Only problem is her sister does not have magic. Years later, tragedy strikes and Viola is forced to attend the school she never wanted to attend and harness the magic she despises. When things take a deadly turn, another member of the school is forced to heal and bond with Viola, at his disdain for her magic house affiliation. They both are thrust into a push and pull while they try to solve the mystery and murders at their academy. While doing this they try to fight the feelings that seem to start developing.
I really enjoyed this book. The tension and slow burn were definitely there. Plot twists and mysteries galore. I was obsessed with the magic system and loved the Magical Snakes. The cliffhanger left me stunned and needing book 2 immediately.
