Immediately, you are thrown into this world of danger and peril. Laïna is our FMC, and all we know of her is that when we are introduced to her, she is out after dark, clearly up to no good.
In this world, there are Elites (Lords & Ladies) and property. Laïna falls into the second category. She was purchased at a young age, braced, and taken into servitude as a child bearing prospect. Only, her master isn't allowed to touch her until her first bleed - of which she has not had. Instead, he has turned to other forms of 'entertainment'. He forces her to make herself bleed over and over through torture.
From the very beginning, we see how harsh and violent her world is. No one can be trusted, and those born under a full moon are killed immediately. Friends cannot be trusted, secrets must be held close, and you must learn to spin words without lying for the pain that comes from lying while braced is horrible.
While the beginning of this book for me began slow and somewhat repetitive, about 25% of the way through I found I'd kept reading longer and longer. I did anticipate some of the plot, but there are moments where I completely did not guess where it would go.
I cried, I laughed, and I got angry. All great things in a book. And at the end, the cliffhanger I didnt expect, keeps me waiting for book 2!
