This was a 4.5-star read for me, rounded up to five. The beginning felt a little slow, mainly because the worldbuilding was thinner than I typically prefer in dystopian stories. I tend to need a clearer sense of how a society became what it is, and the systems of power and oppression didn’t feel fully convincing until later in the book. Once more context was revealed, though, the world became much easier to invest in.
That said, this book totally snuck up on me and pulled me in. I flew through it in just a few days and found myself staying up WAY too late to keep reading. Once the character dynamics were more established I became much more invested. The tension between the FMC and MMC was very believable and compelling, and the emotional moments really hit hard. I found some of the twists to be predictable, but they were still executed well. The escape sequence absolutely had my heart racing!
By the end, I was fully hooked and had to know how it ended. I will absolutely be reading book two to see where the characters go from the end of this book!
