There is something incredibly comforting about knowing that Flint has always been, well, Flint.
I talked about Flint in my review of The Sun King's Dawn and said, “who could seriously have his own book.” I should have known!
Previously, Flint had told Richard the story of his scar and the horrors that followed the crowned prince’s visit to the orphanage years ago. In this book, we learn that the Triad’s history is darker than we knew. In addition to the mistreatment of the orphans, there are literally monsters in the woods and children going missing.
In many ways, Three Little Blackbirds is Flint’s origin story. While we learned about the fire earlier, there is so much more to Flint’s transition from trapped orphan to roguish guild leader. I loved seeing Flint be cocky and sarcastic, and also fiercely protective of his people. As someone who absolutely loves tarot magic, it was amazing seeing the evolution of Flint’s magic and his connection to the Painted Realm.
I loved spending time with Lyell and Edith! While we have seen some interactions with them in The Sun King’s series, it was wonderful to see the Triad together. I appreciated seeing them call out Flint and push him when he hesitates.
Three Little Blackbirds is a fantastic addition to the Sun King world!
