Book: You Did Nothing Wrong by Cg Drews

Rating: 4.5/5

This was a ‘start as a casual read in the afternoon’ and quickly became a ‘stay up until 3am to finish it because wtf is happening, I need to know’. After I finished this book (or it finished me?) I laid in bed staring at the ceiling for a few minutes before getting up and going to make sure my own kids were tucked in bed safe and to kiss their little cheeks.
This book is dark and disturbing and after reading reviews I was a bit nervous as a mom to read this. It is written in such a way that you are convinced of one thing and then as it progresses there is a growing dread of what is really happening before the culmination of the truth that left me totally shook. I like to think I’m pretty good at predicting where a book is going and I did get one thing right but the final twist? I’m still feeling a bit unwell. This is almost a reality horror that gives a stark look at the effects of childhood trauma and neglect, mental illness, and those dark intrusive thoughts parents might have in the face of explosive meltdowns, sleep deprivation and the crushing weight of perceived societal expectations and judgment.
This isn’t a book I would have picked up on my own but I had some trusted reviewers recommend it to me so I gave it a chance - Drews writing has a way of grabbing hold and not letting go and this book has absolutely landed them on my ‘need to read all’ list.
If you want a book with will quietly shake and disturb you and have you thinking on it long after you finish, I absolutely recommend you pick this one up!
