I am a complete goner for Kayce and Raine's stepbrothers enemies-to-lovers cowboy romance.
I love that Kayce is allowed to be imperfect as he explores his shifting views on his sexuality, as well as his identity outside of riding broncos. He makes mistakes but is given the time he needs to fully recognize them, grow, and take steps to make things right. It's a HUGE change from the Kayce we met in the first book of the series, who stole money from his ex-girlfriend and lived inside a bottle. Character growth matters a lot to me as a reader, and I felt incredibly satisfied with Kayce's journey.
And Raine? He is truly everything I love in an MMC: broody, tragically wounded, and equipped with a dirty-talking mouth. He's let Kayce misunderstand him the entire time they've known each other, hiding the sacrifices he made to keep Kayce safe. Yes, he can be a total ass, but underneath is a man who loves deeply and will sacrifice himself to protect the people he cares about. I also love that he pushes Kayce just enough to get him outside of his comfort zone without trying to change who he is.
The chemistry between Kayce and Raine is OFF. THE. CHARTS. They are so incredibly sexy together, but more importantly, I genuinely felt their love and devotion. To paraphrase a famous pair of cowboy lovers, they just don't know how to quit each other.
Saving the Rain is the fourth book in the Crimson Ridge series, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. That said, this series is just too good not to read them all.
