When your next target is a god... things are bound to get complicated.
This is the second book in the Brothers of Olympus series and follows Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea, Earthquakes, and Horses, and Cordelia, one of the deadliest assassins alive.
When Cordelia's latest assignment turns out to be the mighty Poseidon himself, her meticulously planned assassination attempt goes doesn't go as planned. Instead of eliminating her target, she finds herself caught in the orbit of an obsessed, possessive, and utterly captivated Olympian. As the agency that sent her closes in, looking to make her the next target for her failure, Cordelia is forced to rely on the very god she was meant to kill, to protect her.
Much like the first book, this story is packed with the kind of banter that could bring the house down at a comedy show. The humour is quick, sharp, witty, and delivered with flawless timing.
Where book one was an emotional tale of love lost to the centuries, this instalment takes a darker, hotter path. The chemistry between Poseidon and Cordelia is intense, filled with mistrust, tension, desire, and plenty of scorching spice. Watching their relationship evolve was every bit as compelling as the action surrounding them.
I was also delighted to see the return of familiar characters from the first book, and I particularly appreciated the strong message about protecting our oceans—something that feels increasingly important in today's world.
My only real criticism is that I wanted more. More world-building, more time spent exploring the ocean realm, and a deeper dive into Poseidon's domain. It felt like a missed opportunity to further immerse readers in such a fascinating setting.
That said, this was still a thoroughly enjoyable read. Fast-paced, funny, packed with sass and sarcasm, memorable characters, and enough spice to have you clutching your pearls.
