Of Hollowed Stars is the third book in The Embered Fates series, but it is the final book with Seryn and Gavrel as our MCs. We pick up right where Of Blooming Embers (OBE) ended, following Gavrel and subsequently Seryn into the Nether Void as she races to save him. But more than Gavrel waits for Seryn in the Nether Void, and choices will have to be made.
Compared to OBE, Of Hollowed Stars felt like it had a slower pace…until the last bit. Then it felt like someone knocked down the first domino, and the race was on. The tension building up to that moment crept higher with every chapter.
There was a LOT to unpack in this book, and at times it felt a little overwhelming. As an aphantasia girlie, that part of me wished there was less focus on description of the Nether Void and its beasties and more “explanations” about choices and thought processes, I guess I wanted more internal monologues.
Also, leave it to Seryn to ask possibly the biggest question to exist for every person who struggles with existential crises: is it really free will if you say, “Screw fate,” and then still end up exactly where fate wanted you?
The last 30% or so did a good job setting up the shift to the new MMC in the next book. I’m not sure who the new FMC will be, but I have some ideas on who it will be. I’m sad to see Seryn and Gavrel step aside as the MCs, but I am curious to see how the rest of the prophecy unfolds.
