๐Ÿ“Cliff Notes Review-
I almost DNFโ€™d this because I really struggled to get into the world and understand exactly what was happening, but Iโ€™m glad I persevered. The concept of sin physically corrupting your veins was brilliantly dark and different, and eventually the mystery of who was actually good, bad or manipulating whom became far more interesting to me than the romance. I wanted more worldbuilding and clarity around the religions, Bloodrot and the rules of this society, but there was enough intrigue here to make me want to continue the series. Dark, strange and clever, just not quite immersive enough to completely pull me under.

If youโ€™d like, I can now completely rewrite The Dark in Her Veins from the beginning using this exact master template, in the exact order, without missing any sections , and Iโ€™ll research the factual information such as audiobook length, pages, release date, series information and KU availability rather than leaving those fields incomplete.

LISTEN . The audiobook actually helped carry me through the part where I was considering DNFing, but this definitely wasnโ€™t one I could race through. I usually listen considerably faster, but 1.5x was my sweet spot because there is too much going on to let my brain wander for even a minute.

Hayden Bishop did a fantastic job. She has a naturally fairly quick delivery, which combined with a complex fantasy world meant I needed to slow her down to 1.5x, but once I did, everything sounded great.

I particularly liked the darker atmosphere she brought to the narration. Talinโ€™s emotions came through clearly, and the different characters were distinguishable despite this being a solo performance. She handled the menace, uncertainty, attraction and darker emotional moments really well without turning everything into melodrama.

This is also one of those occasions where I think having the audiobook helped me finish a book I might otherwise have put down. When the story wasnโ€™t quite clicking for me yet, the narration gave me something to latch onto until the plot finally did.

Simply put, I nearly didnโ€™t finish it.

The beginning didnโ€™t sink in properly and I had to work harder than I should have to understand the world. A complicated fantasy world isnโ€™t a problem, I actually enjoy having mysteries and clues to unravel, but there is a difference between โ€œI donโ€™t know this yet because itโ€™s deliberately mysteriousโ€ and โ€œIโ€™m not entirely sure Iโ€™ve been given enough information to understand what Iโ€™m reading.โ€

The romance also didnโ€™t convince me enough. There was plenty of desire, attraction and sexual tension, but I wanted more emotional scaffolding underneath it.

The book became much stronger for me once the conspiracy and questions surrounding allegiance took centre stage, but it took too long to reach the point where I actually wanted to know what happened next.

The concept is easily the strongest part of this book. Sin isnโ€™t merely something youโ€™re judged for, it physically corrupts your body. Bloodrot spreads through the veins, eventually bringing madness and death, while the wealthy have predictably discovered a loophole: pay someone poorer to commit your sins for you.

Now THAT had my attention.

Add hired sinners, assassins, religious extremism, corruption, Diabolists, political power and the question of who actually benefits from defining what counts as a sin, and there is a bloody brilliant foundation here.

Unfortunately, I donโ€™t think the world was explained quite well enough early on. I struggled to settle into it and there were points where I felt I was expected to understand rules, factions and motivations before Iโ€™d been given enough information to do so. Thatโ€™s a major reason I nearly DNFโ€™d.

Once I understood more, however, the mystery became much more interesting. Who is actually the villain here? Who is telling the truth? Who is manipulating Talin? Who deserves her allegiance? Is there even a genuinely good side? THAT was what kept me listening.

I wanted considerably more explanation around Bloodrot itself, the religious system, the different groups and particularly the rules surrounding what constitutes sin. If youโ€™re going to build an entire society around morality physically poisoning people, I want to dig right into those rules and all their hypocritical little cracks.

Talin was interesting but I struggled to fully connect with her. Sheโ€™s supposed to be ruthless, angry, dangerous and heavily shaped by everything sheโ€™s survived, and there were moments where I absolutely believed that. Other decisions didnโ€™t quite fit the woman Iโ€™d been introduced to, particularly once Slade entered the equation.

Slade was intriguing because I couldnโ€™t quite decide what the hell to make of him, which worked beautifully with the wider mystery. Heโ€™s dark, sarcastic, dangerous and definitely isnโ€™t sitting politely in the morally-grey section. ๐Ÿ˜‚

What I actually found more interesting than either character individually was everyoneโ€™s allegiance . Gabriel, Slade, Talin and the wider religious system constantly had me questioning whose version of events I should believe. Every time I thought Iโ€™d settled on who the real villain was, another little piece shifted.

The romance, however, never became the part I was desperate for. Thatโ€™s unusual for me. The attraction is intense, dark and heavily physical, but I wasnโ€™t completely convinced by the emotional progression underneath it. I was far more interested in Talin choosing who to trust than who she wanted to sleep with.

Iโ€™d recommend it selectively .
If someone told me they wanted a straightforward romantasy with an addictive romance at its centre, this wouldnโ€™t be my first recommendation. But if they wanted something darker and stranger, with religious corruption, assassins, morally black characters, gothic atmosphere, conspiracy, BDSM and absolutely no idea who they should trust , Iโ€™d point them towards this.

Would I reread it? Possibly, and interestingly I think Iโ€™d probably understand and enjoy it more on a second listen because Iโ€™d already know the foundations of the world.

This very nearly became a DNF, and Iโ€™m glad I gave it more time.

The romance wasnโ€™t what eventually hooked me. The mystery did. I wanted to know who was lying, who was manipulating whom, which side was actually worse and whether the concepts of good and evil even meant anything inside a society where the people defining sin are benefiting from the system.

The Bloodrot concept is fantastic and wonderfully grim. The idea that the wealthy can simply outsource their sins to people desperate enough to destroy themselves for money gives the whole world a particularly nasty bite.

I just wish the book had helped me understand that world sooner.

Once everything started clicking into place, I became much more invested and Iโ€™m now curious about where the larger story goes. Not quite the dark romance I expected to obsess over, but a dark, morally rotten conspiracy wrapped in gothic fantasy?

That part got me. ๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿ–ค

I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another author's hands

It was OK. I wish I didn't start this one as it didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.

I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetitive writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.

I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people, but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.

Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.

Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending it to all!

WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!

This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable. Even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!
