The second book in this duology delivers on its promise of open-door spice, expansive world-building, and deep lore. It moves at a breakneck pace, yet it never robs the reader of the time needed to process those truly impactful emotional beats. James does a fantastic job of keeping you on your toes; there were moments where I audibly gasped, wondering if the characters actually just did that. I also really appreciated the integrated recaps woven throughout the early chapters, which gracefully reminded me of the previous happenings without slowing down the momentum.
I’ll admit, I went into this sequel with some major knots in my stomach. Ever since Fated to the Vampire Prince , the secret Claire was holding onto felt like a ticking time bomb that could absolutely devastate her relationship with Bastien. If you think I’m exaggerating, I promise I’m not—I was a total ball of anxiety about this reveal, and it stayed at the forefront of my mind the moment I began reading this. However, the way James handled the fallout was beautifully done and left me feeling genuinely satisfied, which is a rarity when dealing with the tension of an inevitable miscommunication trope.
Bastien is an absolute king who genuinely wants to do right by both his people and Claire. If you ever need a definition for the "my wife" trope, look no further than Bastien Allard, Duke of Roselyn. He falls so hard for Claire, yet he consistently gives her the room she needs to breathe and find herself. I loved that the book touched on the importance of boundaries, featuring a very real, healthy conversation between the leads that I feel is often overlooked in the genre. Their chemistry is electric, leading to several fun and spicy encounters fueled by enthusiastic consent. Just as a warning to some, there is a br33ding kink explored here that might not be everyone’s cuppa.
Claire’s journey wraps up in a way that feels earned and complete, though the ending hints that there might be more novels to come set in this universe. If that’s the case, sign me up! You should definitely pick this up if you’re looking for a romantasy that delivers poetic justice, a cast of fun side characters, and the ideal balance of plot and spice.
