I absolutely loved the unique scent-based magic system. It fits the Regency-era setting so perfectly, shifting naturally from delicate and beautiful aromas to truly putrid scents depending on the location and crowd.
The chemistry between Viola and Hugh unfolds so naturally. You feel that initial spark during their very first meeting, but Bracken does a phenomenal job cultivating a slow, exquisite simmer. Hugh’s yearning for Viola is unmatched. I swear he would genuinely crawl for her if asked. Viola herself is a fierce Regency heroine who refuses to be treated as a mere ornament for a future husband. She’s a feminist who actively demands change. Seeing Hugh run a household of lovable misfits and champion strong-willed women only solidifies Viola’s attraction to him.
I listened to an ALC, and the narration was a total 10/10. Nicola Barber and Christian Coulson brought these characters to life so vividly that I felt completely immersed in the era.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the writing and world-building, the mid-book pacing felt slightly uneven in a few spots. However, the ending delivered so strongly that it made the entire journey worth it. I’m already looking forward to the next installment!
If you’re looking for a Regency-esque fantasy with a slow-burn romance and great spice, I highly recommend picking this up!
