Prose & Cons: The Devil’s in the Details follows aspiring writer Hannah Johannesson on the journey of getting everything you have ever wanted, but then realizing how it can trap you.
On the brink of giving up on writing after another form reject letter from another literary agent, she meets Virgil Mara. Virgil validates her work and showers her with praise, contacts, marketing, travel - all of it. Is she dreaming or is this all too good to be true?
This book was a delightful read, and it was easy to get swept up and pulled in, much like Hannah did. I enjoyed Hannah, Solveig and Virgil and the dynamics at play. At times it gave me some Doctor Who vibes, but that’s high praise as far as I am concerned.
E.E. Lawson brings us into a world that defies imagination. The world she has built was richly beautiful and immersive. There were times the world we travel with our trio seemed difficult to grasp, but I feel this was intentional on the author’s part. These scenes felt almost indescribable because it was so unique and fantastical and otherworldly. This sense of feeling a little lost -overwhelmed yet utterly amazed -powerfully enhances the story. It’s a reflection of what our characters experienced, and Lawson does a beautiful job inviting us into that wonder.
Prose & Cons prompts us to question our drives for fame and status. Invites us to reflect on what is truly important: having it all or an authentic life.
This was a strong 4.5⭐️for me, and a must-read for anyone who loves reading, writing and the amazing world of books.
