Stupid FMC, budget CC

Book: City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards

So, I usually try to get at least 30 or 50% of a book before DNFing. In my opinion, it's generally enough to have some context, world-building, and a feel for the story. I DNFed at 17% out of the 750 pages.

I picked up this book because it had been heavily marketed as an amazing urban fantasy similar to Crescent City. What I found was some Y/N who really needed critical thinking and some survival instinct, a budget Danika, and overall some pale copy of Crescent City.

The FMC was unbearably… stupid. I have no other words for it. Every decision she makes is selfish and stupid, with no self-preservation or survival instinct. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I could only take so much.

The MMC seemed to be interesting, your usual morally grey lad with a sad past and anger issues. However, every chapter, and I'm not kidding, has one whole page of the author gushing about how handsome he is, how flat his abs are, how defined his muscles are, and how his hair moves that way… I skipped several pages because of it. I mean, come on, we get it; he is broody, dark, and handsome, but can we just… Move along?

Maybe this book will suit younger readers more than me.
