The stakes, the secrets, the slow-burn unraveling of power and betrayal make this is a masterclass in tension and character work. Everyone in this book is deliciously morally gray, and I loved not knowing who to trust. I still don’t. And who is the big bad? Jove? Valter? The gods? I’m convinced the true villain is still playing the long game.
Tessa absolutely owns this book. Her silence, her cunning, the storm she’s kept bottled up… she was building toward something explosive the entire book. She’s giving Aelin energy and I am HERE for it. After everything Theon and Luka kept from her, how could she possibly trust them? And yet, I somehow still want her to get the broody boy at the end?? Theon makes me see red sometimes, but I still want him to be happy?? His redemption arc better hurt.
The multi-POV structure is one of my favorite things about the series. I loved the additional perspectives from Luka and Axel, and especially Luka’s fierce protectiveness over Tessa (he’s so clearly going to be her guardian, right?). And the connection between Axel and Kat is so well done - I’m convinced she’s going to end up mated or bonded to him somehow, and I love it.
Also, seeing the familiar faces from Lady of Darkness? Elite crossover content. I need more Eliza and Raz in book 3 ASAP.
This series has completely hooked me. It’s character-driven and plot-heavy with a complex magic system and dark romance that doesn’t shy away from the mess. If you love slow-burn tension, political scheming, found family, and secret identities, don’t wait - Tessa’s vengeance arc is only just getting started.
