I was lucky enough to receive my first ALC for this one, and it came with the best kind of narration: a duet! Meg Sylvan and Troy Duran absolutely knocked it out of the park with full-body voice acting, sharp emotion, and the kind of delivery that makes every scene hit harder. If you have the option to listen to the audiobook of We Who Will Die, I can’t recommend it enough.
As the first book in the series, this one comes out swinging with gladiator-style arena battles, magical creatures, and a cast of side characters who actually feel worth getting attached to. Add in vampires with ulterior motives and power plays happening behind the scenes, and I was locked in.
We follow Arvelle, a reluctant heroine thrown into the games with one goal: kill the emperor, an ancient, terrifyingly powerful vampire. She’s resilient and resourceful without being absurdly overpowered, and her loyalty to her brothers is the heartbeat of everything she does. There’s also a second-chance romance thread when an old love reappears. However, the story definitely sprinkles in hints that a love triangle may be brewing.
If you love ACOTAR and Fourth Wing, this has serious “next obsession” potential. I finished this one feral and immediately needing book two.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperAudio for the ALC. All opinions are my own.
