Book: SoulSearch by Jodi Davis

I do not often find a book that I enjoy enough for a 5 star rating. This audiobook blew me away! The storyline is captivating, the narrator’s voice is the perfect type of inflection: calm enough to keep you from overstressing during big scenes, yet animated enough to build that tension.
SoulSearch centers on Rebel (Reb), a “wet” who can connect directly with the remains of the internet. Governments have fallen and Corporations run the world. She’s an elite hacker who was part of a small group that survived the surgeries that gave them the abilities to direct-connect. Her other half, Dayze, has died. Or has he? She can feel him in the net. She swears she can still hear him. Is it grief or a new reality?
She encounters Stryck, another wet, but one whose job is security. She quickly realizes that she might be able to achieve the unachievable….Immortatlity. They explore the continued growth of her abilities, work with “borns” to gather as much intel as possible, and set out to change the world.
For those who have been into sci-fi for as long as I have (yeah, I’m old) this is wonderfully reminiscent of “Trouble and Her Friends” by Melissa Scott. It has the dystopian world with just enough hope, just enough tech, and just the right amount of dark humor. I cannot recommend this story, or this particular audio version, enough.
I’m sincerely hoping for Yucca Archives Vol 2 in the near future! With any luck, the same narrator!
