I went into Sorrow Like Sour Candy without preconceptions and this is actually the best approach for this collection. It is not a conventional collection of short stories and it can be a little unsettling and strange at times. This collection focuses on a variety of themes associated with the human condition such as boredom, obsessions, loneliness, broken relationships and a person’s attraction to suffering and how they will break normal human behavior to satisfy their desires. Morrison’s prose is lyrical and allows him to write about depraved and heinous subject matters. I felt as if the collection had two completely different sections, one which I enjoyed and the other which I liked less. I am a fan of open ended and atmospheric short stories and felt this collection reached a state where I needed to question if I was in fact reading a collection of short stories or if I was in fact reading a collection of fever dreams. There is a constant feeling of unease, but there are the begins to feel beautiful. Overall, the collection as a whole fell a bit flat for me, as it doesn’t prove any closure & I would be interested in the individual stories being a bit longer to connect with them more. There were stories I did enjoy though & the book went out with a bang on the last section! Opinions are subjective though & if you enjoy Chandler’s work I would encourage you to go and pre-order this.
