"Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches". This statement echoes throughout this novel, set in two timelines at first, then adds a third as a manuscript within the story. In 1998, Minerva is a resident director at a New England college, working on her thesis about a little known horror writer, Beatrice "Betty" Tremblay. In 1908, Alba is a wealthy young woman living on her father's Mexican estate, days after her father's death. She uses a little spell to summon her beloved uncle to come visit...and he does. As Minerva researches Tremblay, she is allowed to read a manuscript Betty wrote in 1934 about the disappearance of her roommate, Ginny. This book is creepy in the best way- I couldn't put it down and I couldn't turn out the light to read it on my kindle at night. The writing is fantastic and all of the stories tie together to create a satisfying ending.
