4 stars — solid romantasy with a strong heroine, a fun romance, and a twisty finale
Shield of Sparrows was a solid read for me. I wasn’t glued to the pages, but I was happy to follow along. The romance was definitely the highlight—tension-filled, entertaining, and full of banter. The final twist genuinely caught me off guard, which made me even more curious to see what book two has in store.
What I really appreciated was the FMC’s tenacity. She’s not the type to sit around waiting for rescue—she learns, adapts, and does what needs to be done. I love a heroine who saves herself.
That said, she also asked a lot of questions—like, an exhausting number. Just… not the ones she actually needed to be asking. Some of the mid-book twists felt predictable, and while the pacing wasn’t sluggish, it also didn’t create that compulsive need to finish in one sitting until the last few chapters.
Overall, if you enjoy romantasy with a capable, determined heroine, a love story full of tension and secrets, and a twisty ending that raises the stakes, this one’s worth picking up.
