This was a strong finale, though not quite on the level of book three. Jasira being the big bad did surprise me, but I always felt like there was more going on with her than met the eye. Anya being the one to die, and the fate stone being hers, was a twist I didn’t see coming. I liked how that resolved Thea’s prophecy about dying at 27.
Still, a lot of the plot felt protected from real consequences. Between Thea surviving the Rite, Kipp being revived, and most of the major characters making it through the war, the stakes never fully landed for me. The battles were plentiful, but I found myself wishing for more strategy and fewer near-miraculous saves.
That said, the romantic tension worked well this time. The spice felt more earned, especially with Thea’s deadline approaching. Every scene between her and Wilder carried a sense of urgency that made it more impactful.
I’m excited to dive into the Ashes of Thezmarr series next. This wasn’t a flawless ending, but it was satisfying, and I’m glad the story isn’t over just yet!
