This is an intense read as the Institute continues to try and break Brooklyn and bend her to their will. There are some really brutal moments for all the characters and it's not just Brooklyn who has to claw her way out of the darkness; there are some actions which can't be undone this time round.
Although the series' are standalone, I knew some of Brooklyn's backstory from the Sabre Security books which I have read previously but not the details. The twists and turns still got me and I was not prepared for those last few chapters with Bridget Bordeaux doing an amazing performance at this part. Both narrators have a lot of heavy lifting to do as there are some really bleak moments as just when think humans can't be any worse to each other, you're proven wrong. It's an emotional listen with some real sucker punches along the way.
Nix and Eli's development was my highlight though; Nix in particular has a great arc and I liked the exploration of how betrayed he felt by Brooklyn's choices in the last book rather than glossing over it. My heart broke for Hudson and Kade too in different ways as they have to deal with some major consequences orchestrated by Kade's father. I'm hoping there is some vengeance heading his way in book three!
