I finished this book three days ago and needed a little time to collect my thoughts. This was a genuinely fun read, but the ending left a white space in my brain, the kind where you just stare into nothing, processing.
The Dark Lord’s Guide to Dating was exactly what I hoped for from a book recommended to fans of Assistant to the Villain (a series I loveeee). It’s an easy, entertaining fantasy with plenty of fun genre perks, but not high fantasy to the point where you need a map, a glossary, and a headache. The beginning was a bit slow, and I had some trouble staying focused at first, but the banter between the main characters pulled me through. In the end, it absolutely paid off.
Our main character is a fierce, strong-willed woman who was admirable from the very beginning. I’ll admit I was initially confused about how someone so strong could still be so tightly controlled by her father, but everything clicked later in the story. My curiosity was fully rewarded.
And then there’s the Dark Lord. Kazimir is everything I want from a morally black, fairytale villain. Ruthless with everyone else, yet utterly obsessed with his new bride. Delicious. Perfect. That said, he is morally black. Many of his choices toward her are driven by selfish motives, and some left a strange aftertaste, especially near the end. I’m really hoping this gets explored and explained further in book two, just like other plot threads did throughout this one.
The chemistry between the characters is fantastic, and the spice absolutely delivered. I had a blast.
Overall, this is a great read for any girlie who loves intense yearning, blush-inducing spice, feminine rage channeled into a morally gray FMC, and a mystery that doesn’t demand too much brain power but still keeps you intrigued.
