I went into this book completely blind. I had never heard of the author but the cover was what drew me in. I’m so glad I did! As I listened to the audiobook, I was instantly hooked by the familiar towns and landmarks being mentioned especially since it’s a nearby town. Hearing Ember, the teacher, navigate areas I know well made the story feel personal and incredibly engaging. And then, of course, the police officer, Jacob was there also. By chapter 8, I was fully invested and hooked.
The narrator does a great job, although having dual narrators (male and female ) would’ve made it even more dynamic, especially with the instant chemistry between Officer Jacob and Ember. Ember and Jacob’s genuine kindness and compassion shine through, and I’m 100% rooting for this couple!
I was pleasantly surprised that Ashley didn’t play the stereotypical jealous female or mean girl role but she was supportive of Ember and Jacob’s relationship which was refreshing. But that cliffhanger? I didn’t see it coming and thought, there’s no way the book was done, but sadly it was. Now I’m off to check if the next book is out yet or when it will be released because I need to know more about Ember and Jacob and what happens.
