I was so excited to get to be on this ARC team, I had already had a copy of Truth-Teller’s Bargain and absolutely loved it. The magic system and set up was so unique, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Thea.
The author made it very clear this book has a very messy relationship, not exactly a love triangle, but a complicated love “situation”. I was okay with that, and while I generally do prefer a why choose, I was okay with this situation-ship as it was in the book.
Where I felt like I didn’t connect was the plot. This one moved so fast, with so few details, I felt like I’d missed some really important chapters. (I didn’t.) Everything felt… surface level? That’s the best way I can describe this sequel to Bargain. The namesake of the book didn’t have a heavy feature, and I’m still not all the way sure about how it was bestowed or why it was to the person that ultimately wields it. I understand it’s a double meaning here, but compared to the first book, it just didn’t hit that same way.
The other part that… I won't say it bothered me, but it made my eyebrows go into my hairline. It's very clearly called a duet there in the title/subtitle. As in two. Two books, right? Not exactly. The way this ends I was left with more questions than answers, and I felt like I wasn’t sure if there would be more. I don’t know a better way to describe it without spoilers, but I’m curious to see where it goes from here because I don’t feel like we got a clear “the end”.
I will definitely continue reading the series, should the author decide there will be more to Thea’s story.
I received an advance copy of this book from the author and The Nerd Fam at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.
