Maybe They Get Better?

I wanted to like this so badly. And honestly, I think the writing itself is good. That almost makes this more frustrating, because there’s a difference between someone who can write and someone who has the instincts to make the story work.

Everything was just so over the top and dramatic that the characters stopped feeling like real people. They felt like dolls getting shoved around to make the next dramatic thing happen. I could never really connect with the characters because there just wasn’t enough depth there.

And the obsession should have worked for me. I love when a relationship is dark and toxic and completely consuming. That kind of obsession can be delicious because you understand why the characters can’t turn away, even when you know they probably should. This wasn’t that. It felt performative instead of captivating.

The further the book went, the more contrived it became. I kept reading because I was hoping it would eventually click, and by the last five chapters I was basically flipping through them.

And yet… I’m hopeful.

I want to see what happens next. It’s time to find out where April Jade goes from here.
