Her Silence by S. T. Ashman is a tense, emotional thriller that shows how one person’s alcoholism, selfishness, and destructive choices can shatter an entire family.
When Lacey is discovered beside a murdered man, covered in his blood and unable to speak, her mother, Nicole, refuses to believe that her daughter is a cold-blooded killer. As Nicole searches for answers, the story begins unraveling years of secrets, trauma, and complicated family relationships.
My favorite character was Dylan, Lacey’s oldest son. Through him, we see how deeply the decisions made by husbands, fathers, and parents can affect their children. I also felt Lacey’s fear for her children’s future and her desperation to protect them from the consequences of their father’s behavior.
One of my favorite lines was:
“We were broken glass. Shattered by life. Glittering beautifully when the sun hit us. Yet sharp enough to cut anyone who tried to touch us.”
That quote perfectly captures this family. They are damaged, complicated, and still trying to protect one another while surviving everything that has happened to them.
This book also does an excellent job portraying emotional abuse. Abuse does not always leave visible bruises. Sometimes it comes through cruel jokes, manipulation, cheating, lying, drinking, apologies, and promises that are repeatedly broken.
There were moments when I wanted a little more from the pacing and certain parts of the story, but the family dynamics and emotional themes kept me invested.
A gripping domestic thriller about silence, survival, motherhood, and the devastating cycle of abuse.
