Review: Filthy Sweet

I have approximately twelve million books on my Kindle, so picking one is sometimes an exercise in staring at the screen and wondering what the hell I actually want to read. Filthy Sweet made that decision feel immediately worthwhile.

This book grabbed me from the first page. The writing was tight, funny, and just smoldery enough to have me thinking, oh my god, this is going to be so good. A joke within the first few pages already had me absolutely cracking up, but what really worked was that the author had already given me enough context for the punchline to land. It felt effortless.

I also really enjoyed Owen and Fox. Neither character reinvented their trope, but both had enough depth added on that they felt like actual people. Owen was sweet and awkward, but surprisingly adventurous in a way that tracked. Fox was the bad boy, but we got the whys and enough of their shared history to see the good underneath. Their banter was great, and even when the heat got a little cheesy later, I believed their connection and their falling in love.

And then the last third happened.

I don't know exactly what changed, but it felt like the author started coasting. The same book that had me convinced I was reading a five-star romance suddenly had me flicking pages, waiting to get through it. The emotional beats and overall execution lost the naturalness that made the beginning work so well.

So, unfortunately, what started as a potential five-star read ended up being a solid 3 stars for me. The beginning was genuinely that good. I just wish the rest of the book had kept up with it.
