Wow. Just… wow. I don't even know where to begin with A Palace of Smoke & Mirrors, the second book in Loren Little's Gift Wars series. This book completely consumed me from start to finish!

This book is a total soul destroyer, and I mean that in the best possible way. It expertly weaves together some of my favorite tropes: fated mates and touch her and die. The slow burn was excruciatingly good, building an incredible amount of tension and frustration that finally led to some truly smoldering scenes with Aura, Lucais, and Wrenlock. The why-choose vibe was so well done, and those spicy moments? Absolutely HOT.

Beyond the undeniable heat, this installment really impressed me with its character development. We get a much deeper dive into the backstories of Aura and Lucais, understanding the origins of their complexities and motivations. Aura's inner dialogue was a particular highlight – she's a wonderfully fun and sassy FMC who I instantly connected with. I was so engrossed that I genuinely didn't realize the book was 706 pages until I finished it; I just devoured every single word.

And that ending? It broke me. Seriously. I finished it feeling completely shattered, yet utterly thrilled. I wish I could take back reading it just to experience it for the first time again (just kidding, I really don't!). The cliffhanger was a complete shock, and I absolutely did not see it coming. Now I'm left desperate for the next book; I need to know what happens!
