Respectfully, WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?! You cannot get me this emotionally invested and then leave me hanging like that.

The Embrace of Betrayal completely hooked me from the very first chapter. I was unable to put it down as Leona Welch pulled me into Elara and Rylan's story.

There is a lot happening in this world. Different powers, secrets, betrayals, relationships, prophecies, and layers of lore. Every time I thought I was starting to understand how everything fit together, another revelation would drop and I'd be questioning absolutely everything all over again. At some point I basically gave up highlighting because I would've been highlighting the entire book.

Elara and Rylan were easily one of my favourite parts of the story. Their chemistry, banter, little notes, and the way their relationship develops had me completely invested. There were definitely moments where I wanted to grab Elara by the shoulders and tell her to LET THE MAN IN, but the more I learned about her past and everything she's carrying, the more I understood why trust doesn't come easily to her.

And Rylan? Yeah... I love that man. This man is absolutely full of secrets, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to figure him out. He's completely unafraid of Elara and seems genuinely obsessed with provoking her just enough to get her to pull out one of her knives.

Rylan and Elara are destined to find each other in every lifetime. In her last life? She killed him.

The romance was fantastic, but what really pushed this into five-star territory for me was that the romance never replaced the story. There is an actual plot here, and it's a complicated, layered one. I love fantasy that gives me lore, history, secrets buried beneath secrets, and tiny details that suddenly become important hundreds of pages later.

The twists hit hard. The betrayals were devastating. More than once, I found myself laughing, crying, yelling at characters, and sitting there wondering what the actual hell had just happened. The emotional tension, relationships, world-building, mysteries, and plot twists completely stole the show.

And that ending? The final chapters answered questions I'd been carrying for the entire book while somehow creating about seventeen new ones. I closed this book with considerably more questions than I started with, and somehow I mean that as the highest compliment possible.
