Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Fire | Sourcebooks Fire and Netgalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given.

I had such high hopes for this one. I adore a good dystopian YA book, it’s like coming home for me as a reader. This one (despite originally being published in 2018) started out with the exact kind of vibe I was looking for, and a hell of a hook. Then it just kind of dwindled. The energy and pacing felt super slow and focused on so many details that weren’t important. Then would gloss over the big ones like the connection with the raven that required surgery. By the 14% mark I’d hoped we were into the action but it is STILL the night before Recruitment comes to take the 17 year olds. I kept putting the book down and not wanting to pick it up again. I couldn’t connect and engage with the characters. Even with all the detail, they felt one-dimensional. Unfortunately, this one was a DNF for me.
