Beneath Still Waters is a romantic suspense with a heap of yearning and a boat load of mystery.
Disenchanted marine biologist Emery, in need of a break after being overlooked for yet another grant, takes a six month research assignment in the small South Carolina town of Tidehaven. There she meets ex Navy SEAL Reid.
When Emery witnesses something that puts her firmly in the cross hairs of some very dangerous people, she finds herself putting her safety in the hands of Reid and his military training.
This book was atmospheric, gritty, and tense, all within a southern small town feel.
The characters of Emery and Reid were individually well written with clear building and thought put into them, but as a couple, they didn't quite hit the mark for me. I couldn't buy into their relationship due to it feeling rushed. I would have really liked to have seen more of their coming together because them moments they share had the potential to feel so much more intense. There is spice within the book but it is just the right amount so as not to detract from the thrill and the mystery of the story.
The twists, turns, and threats are plenty and the conclusion was unexpected in the best way, and leads us nicely into book two - which I will be reading for sure. Until then, I'll be working my way through Linny Mack's back catalogue of other reads.
I would like to thank the author and Page & Vine, for the opportunity to read Beneath Still Waters early. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable read and my first of Linny Mack's
