What a quick, fun fantasy read! For fantasy books, I'm so used to them been at least 400+ pages and the world of fantasy is so often a world of duologies and trilogies and even longer series. So to find what appears to be a standalone? A breath of fresh air!
The length of the book did worry me at times. Because again, most fantasy books are on the longer sides, which is usually needed in order to set up the world-building and the relationships. The author does is so wonderfully here though, not only placing most of it in an urban setting but also with how the universe is set up.
It's intruiging and a nice little twist to read about elves in a time that's all about faeries, vampires and shadow-wielders. And as good a job as the author does with the length of the book, I can easily see this being longer just to deep dive into the history and lore and customs of the elves. I want more of this world and I do hope she writes more in the future!
As someone who studies communication and linguistics, this book made my academic heart very happy. As someone who loves yearning and a slow-burn, I was also very happy even though, again, I wanted more! The main characters are complex and interesting, and I absolutely adore the side characters and their story as well.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a fantasy standalone or anyone who's just looking for a fun, quick read that's still high stakes and that involves a couple you root for!
