Not Another Happily Ever After by A.R. Schilling is a compelling addition to the fairytale retelling genre. It offers a refreshing blend of emotional depth and intrigue. Schilling’s strength lies in crafting characters who feel fully realised. They’re flawed but determined, and shaped not only by their choices but by the choices of those around them.
Sunday is such a wonderful, brave, and compassionate character. Her qualities make her feel incredibly tangible and deeply relatable. And Frog? Our shy, steadfast knight? I adored him. He’s such a gentle soul, fiercely protective of Sunday, and that moment where he sings her to sleep from outside her carriage is bloody adorable .
There were a few points where the narrative felt slightly disjointed, prompting me to glance back at the previous paragraph for clarity. Despite that, the core premise and the character work were genuinely compelling, and they anchored the story beautifully.
I’m genuinely looking forward to the second book. The ending left things on a tantalising little cliffhanger, and now I’m eager to see where the story goes next.
