So HL Day wins for having the scariest campfire section. I absolutely recommend this book, but I don’t recommend starting it alone at night with only the small circle of light from your Kindle screen.
What stood out to me is that while the Cryptid in this novel is a Shadow Person, so much of the story is Rowan battling his own shadows and demons. What seems like the threat, Caligo (Cal), actually helps him sort himself out and find his way out of the darkness. Rowan has an incredible amount of trauma to work through, so I like that the relationship with Cal is mostly easygoing.
Cal was absolutely hilarious as a “monster” who has observed humanity for thousands of years, but never really interacted with it. It was fun seeing him take things literally and get completely confused by Rowan’s colloquialisms. He is possessive of Rowan and quick to announce that Rowan belongs to him, yet he is also willing to adapt and learn so he can be a good partner.
Noctis was another amazing entry in the Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids series!
