Book: Misfit Monsters by Eva Chase

I really liked the FMC Peri; Vanessa Moyen brings out her blend of optimism and naivety made her really endearing without every being too sickly sweet. Considering this is set in a reform school it was an interesting twist as I'd expected more of the usual tough as nails FMC. Instead she is a total golden retriever and I was here for it. I enjoyed how Peri's relationships with the MMCs are evolving at their own paces both during and out with the missions. Raze is my current favourite MMC and the development of his gentle giant side as well as seeing him open up to Peri had me rooting for him. Aiden Snow's Mirage though was my favourite performance; he really leans into the bright side of the character whilst also showing his underlying insecurities. Hail, however, can get in the bin. He lost me from his use of the word "pudgy" and although he has changed his tune a little, I'm hoping there is grovel incoming.
There is ongoing drama with some mean girls and I am also hoping a couple of the characters end up on the receiving end of Peris other side at some point. They don't even seem aware of what Peri is capable of yet and their cruel tricks had my heart was breaking for her. They have no clue what she has been through and seem to have gotten off scot-free so far.
Its not too terrible a cliff-hanger which was a nice change of pace nor is the tone as dark as some of Chase's other series although there are darker moments in more than one of the characters past. This is a standalone in the Shadowkind universe and although you don't need to have read the other books (I haven't made it through all the previous series yet) I'd suggest the Shadowblood Souls series if you want a little more context on the reform school set up.

5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
