Let me preface this by saying, I am very picky about my urban fantasy books. Typically, I avoid them because they take me out of the narrative often when they reference real world things. That being said, The Rise of Scarlett Heroux (TRoSH) makes it feel far more cohesive. There are cars, boats, phones, streaming, computers. It doesn't feel like Elizabeth is trying to sell you on this fantastical world, while ALSO giving them modern technology.
The magic system in this book is very interesting. No one is Fae, or anything ect. They're all humans, and everyone can have magic. It is a uniquely built system that I can't wait to explore more of. I love the idea of finding your light, learning your valor, and trying to figure out what it all means.
Following Scarlett after her fathers death, you learn just how far political corruption can go. Things don't add up at first, and throughout the entirety of the book you slowly begin to piece things together. There's so much going on, and we're only seeing it from one POV. We barely touch on the other countries that exist, because as of right now the conflict doesn't involve them.
I would advise anyone who so chooses to read this book, read the trigger warnings. There is some descriptive gore and scenes that could be very triggering.
I cannot wait to see how the rest of the series pans out. Elizabeth Watson surprised me with her urban fantasy setting, but I couldn't put the book down!
