This being an interconnected standalone it didnt feel as though I was missing out on too much. There were places where I was like O that definitely happened in the other books but it never effected the actual story. With that said this was a excellent read, the inner conflict Kjeld has through the first half of the book and his actual feelings towards Caelian drove the story home and the tension was palpable. I am definitely going back to read the other prior to the next book.
