This might be my new favorite Melissa K. Roehrich series.

Thank you, Melissa K. Roehrich, for an eARC.

From the dedication until the very last word, I was hooked. MKR’s world-building already blew me away in the Legacy series, but she just continues to exceed my expectations. I want to file away any minor detail because it may be important later, and it often is. Even her most dire worlds I want to visit because they are always so lush in lore, mythos, and her whole Chaosverse has an intriguing magic system. I am so in love with the symbolism of the marks, the pantheon, and even the calendar used in Avonleya. This book really had it all for me. The immersive world-building, relationships and characters with depth, action, intrigue, and it is just beautifully written. If you have read none of her amazing series, you can jump in with Tortured Souls, there is no set reading order, and the Avonleya series technically takes place before Lady of Darkness.

I love Kailia, and she is what made this a 6⭐ read for me. The neurodivergence rep is so well written I thought I was reading about myself sometimes. Beyond that, she is still just such a well-written and badass FMC. Everything about her interested me: her magic, her fighting prowess, and especially her wardrobe choices, which all made perfect sense for who she was and her personal goals. I am so excited for book two so I can learn more about her. This book gave me a new understanding of Razik and puts him up there with my other favorite Chaosverse MMCs. Cethin on the other hand is an enjoyable character, and the dynamic between the three would not be the same without him, but I am not sure of my full feelings on him until we finish the series.

If you have enjoyed any of Melissa K. Roehrich’s books, you will definitely enjoy her newest offering. If you are new to the Chaosverse but love LJ Andrews’ Stonegate Series or The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent definitely check out Tortured Souls.
