Ayla may be Lady Blackwell but her husband is a cruel man. When their castle is taken over by invaders she becomes a hostage and though she is afraid, she would very much rather her current situation than the alternative. Lord Niel may be ruthless but he is determined to save his army. When he meets Lady Blackwell he treats her kindly, though with suspicion. It isn’t until he notices the bruises that cover her arms that he realises there is more to this woman than meets the eye. Ayla and Niel are far from perfect and their pasts are the stuff of nightmares that haunt them. Somehow, they manage to motivate one another as they overcome the very thing(s) they fear.
I am so in love with Knight’s Fire. I started reading it at night and before I knew it, it was well past my bedtime and nearing my wake-up time but the time spent is very worth it. While I wouldn’t necessarily refer to it as cozy, something about the story is heartwarming. Where there is despair and heavier topics and references, there is also a lot of hope and overcoming the ghosts of the past. The plot and characters feel rich and for an interconnected standalone, the story and relationships are easy to follow. It’s difficult to not get pulled into the story right away. This medieval fantasy brings me back to my roots and the way I first fell in love with reading when I was much younger.
