Magical rivals to lovers

Book: Strange Familiars by Keshe Chow

This was such an engaging read, there was action and intrigue right from the start! Gwendolynne and Harrisford are rivals, competing for the top spot as Dux of their year at college, which comes with the coveted position in the Ministry of Magic. This is just what Gwen needs to provide for her family. But when magical surges start occurring, and people and familiars are getting hurt, they join forces to investigate and come up against corporate greed, capitalism, and very real danger. And of course as they spend more time together they start to realise maybe they don't hate each other.

I was entertained throughout and the mystery of what caused the magical surges was intriguing. The magical animals they encounter in their schooling and nights on call were interesting too. Their friends were great characters who stood up to support them when needed, but it's Percy the cat who is a star in his own right. The perfect blend of a grumpy sassy familiar who cares more than he admits. Then the ending is gasp after gasp and I'm going to be eagerly awaiting the second book in this duology to find out what happens next!
