This is book one of a new series, billed as an Adult Epic Fantasy. I will say, it does read rather Romantasy-ish, but also, not super heavy into the Romance aspects (at least not yet…👀)?
And yet! It doesn’t read quite like the average Romantasy either, especially with the multi-POV approach.
Needless to say, this one may not work for pure Epic Fantasy and/or Romantasy fans, but…it did work for me! 🙌
We jump right into the story/world, and kind of learn what is happening as it goes on. I do think that worked (at least for me) for this particular story, because we aren’t supposed to know everything, as there’s quite a lot that is not really known by many of the main characters surrounding this Angel v Demon war. And not even our Angel MC, Yuriel, quite knows the why’s and what’s of it all.
I was completely swept away by the story and engaged the whole way through, not quite knowing the motivations/goals of some of these characters, and I loved the mystery of it all.
As for the romance aspects? 🤷♀️ Maybe a love triangle? Maybe not? 👀 There definitely seems to be romantic feelings developing…and some stuff goes down at the end that has me wondering about endgame potentials…🤔
Audiobook notes: Multi-cast narration for the 4 POV characters, and what a cast list! Marisa Calin, Kristin Atherton, Shane East, and Major Curda. All providing the perfect voices for their characters, and a few of them even singing! (Which I thought was actually done really well? Caveat, I listen at a rather fast speed, but it still sounded pretty good to me? 👍) I did have a bit of a hard time keeping some of the characters straight (mostly the Angels…so many names sounded similar?), and do think people who tend to have a harder time with epic fantasy on audio would do best with an eyeball/immersive read. But definitely think the audio production was fabulously done.
