I have never laughed so hard or so often about people dying as I did while reading this book. I don't know where Sara Whitney has been my entire life, but I am so glad I found her because her ability to blend dark comedy with feminine rage is right up my alley.
Rue is a badass forensic investigator by day and a Dexter-esque serial killer by night. When the justice system fails to bring the worst of the worst to justice, Rue is there to right those wrongs. She is intelligent, witty, and super capable—prepared for anything that could happen on a job... until a masked man catches her at a target's house.
Rue's next-door neighbor is the boring Dr. Hugo Mohr, a teletherapist who wears the exact same beige cardigan every day. At least, that's who he is to Rue. To his "intakes," he's a serial killer. That's right: dueling serial killers. Hugo is obsessed with Rue and will do anything to keep her safe and happy, and I do mean ANYTHING.
I loved Rue and Hugo when they were just neighbors chatting about roses, and I REALLY loved them once they discovered they share more than just a wall in their duplex. They have absolutely insane chemistry, full of witty banter and on-the-job spiciness. But underneath all the murder and mayhem is a surprisingly deep connection, as they finally find someone who sees every part of them and doesn't look away. They are tender, sexy, and hilarious. I ate them up.
The cast of side characters—Rue's sister, Hugo's best friend, and a mysterious cleaner—are equally captivating. I am already counting down the days until the next book in the series.
