Last Dancer of the Egyptian Sky by Amanda Meuwissen
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)
This book continues the evolution of the Lovers of the Gods series, putting the love story between humans Nakht and Meryt front and center. Nakht and Meryt are slaves of the Pharaoh, trained to dance for him as well as serve as part of his stable of lovers. While they may never be free, they are deeply in love and content to simply share their lives together. When Meryt is killed in an attack on the palace, Nakht finds himself transported to the land of the gods. There, he is given a deal: if he can resist the temptations the gods offer and remain true to Meryt, they will be reunited.
Nakht and Meryt's love for each other is truly beautiful. We get glimpses of their past through Meryt's memories, and each one is touching and emotional—a perfect counterbalance to the highly spicy scenes between Nakht and the gods. Even in death, Meryt is never far from Nakht's thoughts, and I found myself rooting so hard for their reunion.
I loved this pivot from the straight spice of the first book and the human x god romance of the second. Centering an established relationship and making Nakht's devotion to Meryt the driving force behind his encounters with the gods kept the series feeling fresh and had me wholly emotionally invested.
As for the gods themselves, I'm very unfamiliar with Egyptian mythology, but I can honestly say this book piqued my interest. I never realized how heavily animal imagery features in their depictions, and I found it creative how the author managed to incorporate those elements into the spicy scenes.
